Pencils, Poems and Princesses
Pencils, Poems and Princesses
This pack takes an in-depth look at how stories and poems can form
the stimulus for a wide range of science and technology activities.
Divided into three chapters, the book focuses on science investigations, cross-curricular
themes, and science linked with structured play. One book is used in each chapter to illustrate
how science activities can be linked to literature, and these are 'Princess Smartypants' by
Babette Cole, 'Grandfather's Pencil and the Room of Stories' by Michael Foreman and the poetry book
'Out and About' by Shirley Hughes. The pack provides a detailed teacher's guide to planning and carrying out
activities, and suggestions are made for incorporating photocopiable pictures into children's activity sheets. (5-7 years)
Price £10.00
A Pinch of Salt
This series of activities presents a cross-curricular approach to the topic of 'salt'. The main focus of the pack is on the science involved with the use of salt as a de-icer on roads during very cold weather. Children investigate the effects of salt on ice, plants and cars, whilst learning about solutions, evaporation and filtration. These science activities are linked to further work in English, mathematics, technology, history, geography and religious education. 8 - 11 years
Healthy Drinks and Tasty Toothpaste
The children are introduced to this through a real life context when a toothpaste manufacturer, in conjunction with a soft drinks manufacturer, wants to develop an appealing toothpaste that provides maximum protection against the effect of sugar in the drinks. They investigate how acid causes tooth decay, ingredients for toothpaste and the effectiveness of a variety of types of toothpaste. The activities are suitable for 7 - 9 year olds but can easily be adapted to suit upper KS2
Smart Bricks for Smart Plants
In this pack, aimed at 9 - 11 year olds, children look at the impact of the crop nutrition industry on the production of healthy plants for a range of purposes. They compare plants grown in a variety of nutrients and look at how the basic structure of the different plant parts gives leaves strength and durability and root systems the ability to anchor the plant and search out water. Information gathered by the children is reported back to the research laboratories of a fertilizer production company.
